Baden Guitars and Song DISCovery’s Great Guitar Giveaway!

Congratulations to our Baden Guitars/Song DISCovery Great Guitar Giveaway Winners!

Fifth Winner, September 09: Keith Elgin, VA

Keith
Where are you from?

Northern Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C.

How long have you been a subscriber to Song DISCovery?
2 years.

Tell us a little about your church?
I am on staff at Christ Church in Fairfax Station, Virginia. We are United Methodist in denomination, however our contemporary "worship style" is different from the traditional style in most UMC churches.

What is your role in your church?
I lead worship for adult services and also head up the worship teams for youth and children. I also lead worship at other events and conferences throughout the Mid-Atlantic area.

What does your worship service look like?
We typically have an opener, followed by 3 songs. That leads into the message, which we follow with a response song. We have three services back to back, which go no less than 1 hour, and no more than 1 hour and 5 minutes.

How do you primarily plan on using the guitar?
To write songs that hopefully help people engage Christ in a new way.

Congratulations, Keith!

Fourth Winner, August 09: Nathan Sutliff, TN

Nathan
Where are you from?

I am originally from northwestern Pennsylvania but have lived just south of Nashville for 7 years.

How long have you been a subscriber to Song DISCovery?
I have been a subscriber personally for almost 4 years now, I think.  I inherited the subscription when I started here and have continued to subscribe.

Tell us a little about your church?
I work at Grace Church of the Nazarene in Columbia, TN.  We average around 750 people each week split between our three Sunday services.  There is an overwhelming feeling of family and community within our congregation.  We have a real heart to get beyond our doors to the community.

What is your role in your church?
I am the Director of Creative Arts and oversee the audio/visual, drama, web and graphics departments as well as lead worship and direct our wonderful choir each Sunday.  I am surrounded by a great cast of amazingly talented volunteers who really make everything happen.

What does your worship service look like?
We have a great worship band, vocal ensemble, and choir that lead our worship.  We do our best in planning to make a connection with the songs chosen and the message our pastor delivers. Our style includes a little bit of everything from modern, traditional, and contemporary worship music in both the choir specials and with congregational involvement.  I guess you would call it a blended service.  We look to choose music that can help move people from point A in the service to point B and make a connection with message.  We are passionate to worship our Creator and share God's love with others through music and the creative arts.

How do you primarily plan on using the guitar?
I will use it interchangeably with my other acoustic and select it based on the tone and color desired for a specific song.  It will also allow me to use special tunings for certain song selections that could not have happened beforehand.

Congratulations, Nathan!

Third Winner, July 09:  Kathy Klinger, N.Y.

Where are you from?

I live in Clay, NY; just north of Syracuse. Snow country!!

How long have you been a subscriber to Song DISCovery?
5 years.  A wonderful decision as it has kept me up to date on current worship trends.

Tell us a little about your church?
We attend Mallory Wesleyan, a small country church in Mallory, NY.  Great food, great fellowship, and a heart for the community.

What is your role in your church?
Have served on worship teams in several churches over past 30 (shouldn't be in print) years. Worship leader for several years at Mallory, now filling in when needed. Currently provide leadership for monthly women's fellowship/study group. Primary role? Nurse practitioner caring for cancer patients.

What does your worship service look like?
Our congregation ranges from infants to 90+ saints.  The worship service has reflected that with a blended service of styles from hymns to contemporary.   It's been a blessing that a variety of styles is embraced.

How do you primarily plan on using the guitar?
Great question.  When leading worship, certainly.  But I think guitars are the heart strings of personal worship.  The Baden is sweet, what a nice way to express worship to God.

Thanks for great songs, and a beautiful guitar.  No better gift to a worshipper!
In Christ,
Kathy

Second Winner, June 09:  Bret Cogan, N.C.

Where are you from?
I live in Winston Salem, North Carolina with my wife and daughter.

How long have you been a subscriber to Song DISCovery?
I started subscribing to Song DISCovery about three years ago; it has been a great resource for me in my effort to start a new worship service in the church I have served for the last five years.

Tell us a little about your church?
The church I serve is a traditional United Methodist Congregation.  When I came here we had one traditional service at 11:00.  About three years ago, we started a second acoustic worship service that was intended to reach people with little to no experience with the church.  It is relaxed and free flowing.  It has been a slow process with much learning, yet it continues to grow and take shape.

What is your role in your church?
I am the pastor and worship leader in both services. We have a part time accompanist and a volunteer choir director for the traditional service; both of them are dedicated and very talented.  In the acoustic service we have some great volunteers who join me in our praise band.

What does your worship service look like?
Our acoustic worship service is where we use most of the music from Song DISCovery. The atmosphere is relaxed with the feel of a coffee house with fresh hot coffee and tea for our guests.  We are intentionally open to those with little to no experience of church in this service.  But on the 5th Sundays of a month, which occurs 3 to 4 times a year, we hold one service and invite the people from our traditional service to join us.  I have really appreciated the new arrangements of many of the classic hymns that are available with Song DISCovery.  They have helped us build a bridge between the congregations of our traditional service and our acoustic service!

How do you primarily plan on using the guitar?
As you can see from the pictures, I will use the Baden guitar in worship, as well as at home with my family.  It is a wonderful guitar with an amazing sound!

Congratulations, Bret!

First Winner, May 09:  Tommy Everett, Arkansas

Baden Winner Tommy
We asked Tommy a little about himself and his church and this is what he shared:

Can you tell us a little about First Baptist Church, Genoa, Arkansas?
“We have about 150 people on Sunday mornings. Our only full-time staff are the pastor and the receptionist. But we also have a youth pastor who is bi-vocational and an eight person praise team.”

What does your worship service look like?
“I basically lead with just a guitar, but our church is sending our whole praise team to the National Worship Leader Conference this year. When they asked me to step in as worship leader, I said that I was raised in a very traditional setting, but I’m a contemporary worship leader. They still wanted me and have embraced more contemporary worship; I’ve even had elderly people come up to me with tears in their eyes saying how much the music means to them. So the church is very accepting of this style of music, which is kind of unusual for where we live—this area still tends to be very traditional. “

How long have you been a SD subscriber?
“About a year. I went to the [National Worship Leader] conference last year in Austin, and that’s where I first subscribed and I love it. I’m a bi-vocational worship leader so I’m always looking for new material, in fact we are working on Tommy Walker’s “Pass It On” right now. It’s a great tool.”

Congratulations, Tommy!

We've still got 4 guitars to give away! So enter the contest or - if you're not an SD subscriber - subscribe today and then enter!  We will pick the monthly winners from the entire pool of entrants (not just people who entered during the previous month).  So the sooner you enter the more chances you have to win!
