Charles E. Fromm (Chuck) graduated from Modesto Jr. College in 1970. His dual interests of community and music began there with a major study of annexation law and his formation of a Christian music group, The New Life Singers. At CSU, Fullerton, he studied both public administration and music, graduating with a BA in Political Science. He also pursued a Masters in Public Administration at USC. After completing a one year Administrative Internship with the City Manager for Costa Mesa, California, Fromm was selected by Yuba City, California to serve as Assistant City Manager. In 1973, Fromm began local outreach concerts with developing Jesus bands, ultimately promoting evangelistic concerts up and down the West Coast and planting new churches. In 1974, he was elected City Clerk of Yuba City. Fromm accepted a call to lead Maranatha! Music in 1975. His activities there combined the growth of the music business and the use of profits to support outreach. Fromm spent the next twenty-five years there as CEO/President/Pastor initiating The Praise Series, Kids Praise, Psalms Alive/The Worship Community, Words of Worship, Colors Instrumental Series, Hymns & Choruses, The Praise Band (collaborating with Greg Laurie), and the groundbreaking Gospel of John, illustrated by artist Rick Griffin. His many contributions to Christian music resulted in the company receiving both a Lifetime Achievement Award (Gospel Music Association) in 1990 and The President’s Award (National Religious Broadcasters) in 1991. He founded both Maranatha Missions Development (1978) and Ministry Resource Center (1980). The latter focused on patronage of new artists and is one of the earliest experiments designed to empower grassroots Christian musicians. He is the author of New Song: the Sound of Spiritual Awakening, a paper delivered at Oxford University in 1983. He has lectured on Christian music and worship at Princeton, Baylor and Fuller, among many other Universities and colleges. Fromm plans to continue his work as founder/publisher of Worship Leader magazine, The Worshiper magazine and Song Discovery and to expand his present publishing activities, applying and further exploring the conclusions of his doctoral dissertation regarding textual community, New Song and devotional arts. As the new church institutions formed in the past forty years face the critical transition of founder to second, Fromm expects his writing and consultation work to grow in the area of leadership succession. However, his present priorities are assisting his wife and forever partner, Stephanie, with the launching of their five children into life.
