While everyone appreciates a compliment about a song they’ve written, what most aspiring songwriters need is constructive input from veteran songwriters that will help them push their craft to the next level. We all have opinions about everything we see, listen to or read. Critiques or reviews are just that—opinions by someone who is knowledgeable about a given subject whose review is supposed to help you make up your mind whether or not you want to spend your time and money on whatever the product is.
As songwriters, we want reviews—good or bad, like ‘em or not—because they help us to gauge, to a degree, whether or not our songs are resonating with people. And because the message is the most important factor in Christian music, honest input from a professional is invaluable. It’s one thing for someone to be critical of your music—everyone has an opinion—but wouldn’t it be nice to receive input from someone who actually cares about helping you and knows what they’re talking about?
SongCheck exists to encourage, equip and educate songwriters in their craft and calling. We love God, and we love God’s people. We care about what is being communicated through your music, and we’re here to help. SongCheck is a safe and secure place where any songwriter, industry veteran or newbie, can receive input about the melodic and lyrical content of their songs. Each and every submission will be professionally reviewed with the goal of helping you invest in the talent God has given you.
Part of the criteria we will use to assess each song comes from the same criteria we use when evaluating entries to Song DISCovery:
- Production Quality
We want to be fair to the songwriter and present their song in the best light.
- Style Diversity -
We serve 20,000 worship communities, each with a diverse worship culture, and style cannot be the evaluative deciding factor. Listen to your song. Can it be adapted? Does it have the strength lyrically to be modified to fit a multitude of congregational settings?
- Worship Function -
The song needs to serve a function in the worship service: offertory, communion, main congregational worship portion of the service, benediction, choral, special number, etc.
- Lyrical Poetry & Accessibility -
Does your song allow worshipers to offer their praise and worship in a new and unique (but not too unique) way. They also need to be accessible, each church’s definition of what is accessible will differ but generally if you can sing the song after only hearing one verse and one chorus it is accessible.
- Biblical Faithfulness -
Above all else this criterion is most important. We need to make sure the lyrical content is doctrinally sound. What truth is it speaking to the congregation? And is this what we want to present to congregations to be sung over people in worship services?
In addition to the above, SongCheck goes even further to help you understand the "5 Things That Help to Make a Great Praise and Worship Song." We want to invest in you so that you can give back to the Lord a return on the gifting He has placed within you.
The submission fee for each song is just $25.00 (less than anywhere else in the industry) payable through PayPal. Each SongCheck review will come in a written evaluation and can either be mailed physically or electronically to the submitter within two weeks of receiving the song.
Some songwriters who submit their songs for review will receive an approval for future evaluation via WebEx where they can enjoy a one-hour consultation with the industry professional that reviewed their submission. Here the reviewer can expand on that song critique as well as answer any questions the submitter might have. The one-hour private consultation fee is $125.00 payable through PayPal.
